I had to read this comic strip five times before I could figure it out. When I first read it, I thought the big ninja was teaching the little ninja to do some magic trick. Unfortunately, the little ninja became confused, and instead of doing the magic trick correctly, the little ninja turned into a scarecrow instead. Oops!

I will admit I finally got it. After much study, I realized that the scarecrow is actually a target dummy, and the big ninja is trying to teach the little ninja to throw knives at the target dummy. Instead of hitting the target dummy, however, the little ninja has hit the big ninja instead. Now that I understand the gag, I have an observation to make. This kind of humor is ten times easier for the reader to understand if the artist shows complete figures in the panel, instead of just heads and shoulders and so forth. As George Lucas instructed Stephen Spielberg before shooting 'Indiana Jones', 'The audience should see the complete gesture.'
